University of Technology

Graz University of Technology was founded in 1811. The University Archives, however, is a rather young institution. Established in 1996 it was continuously expanded over the years so that the archives now occupy more than 2.200 meters of shelving. The University Archives is responsible for the selection, administration and preservation of a great variety of records in paper format and of approximately 140.000 diapositives.

Our holdings:

  • central administrative records dating from 1826 to the present
  • administrative records of faculties, deans’ offices and departments
  • student records (matriculations, records on examinations sat and degrees awarded)
  • special collections (photographs, slides, prints, plans, maps, picture postcards, stamps ...)
  • bequests of renowned University teachers
  • bequests and premortem bequests of renowned architects or architectural practices affiliated with Graz University of Technology

Apart from administrative records and student records (the latter are of great interest for genealogical research), architectural bequests and premortem bequests as well as collections containing material on members of the Graz School of Architecture are of particular importance.

The following collections are going to be made available online during the next years:

  • TU-Styriaca (= material on/by Styrians affiliated with Graz University of Technology or on Styria): Photographs and transparencies documenting Styrian and Austrian architectural history of the 19th and 20th century will be supplemented with additional information and presented online.
  • Early records on examinations sat and degrees awarded: Early records on examinations sat and degrees awarded will be made available online in order to support tracking down information on students and graduates of the TU Graz between 1826 and 1865.
  • TU Graz digital: Pictorial and written records documenting the history of Graz University of Technology will be digitalized and put online.
  • Architectural plans – Eichholzer and contemporaries: Architectural plans of the architectural practice Eichholzer and its successor Hodnik are going to be made available online.
  • Cimelia: In the University’s central administrative records there are numerous seals, signets, interesting letterheads as well as advertising material and posters.

The most beautiful and precious of them are going to be digitalized and made available online.
